Heartland Utilities for Energy Efficiency Awards $12,000 to Area Middle Schools for Promoting Energy Efficiency

Heartland Utilities for Energy Efficiency (HUEE) is proud to announce the winners of the "Secure Energy Future" video contest. Sixth through eighth grade students in the Kansas City metro area were encouraged to create 120-second public service announcements (PSAs) that promote energy efficiency at home or at school. Six area middle schools were selected to receive grant money for their participation.

Kearney Middle School won first place for Missouri, $3,000; Grandview Middle School won second place, $2,000 and Plaza Middle School received third place, $1000. For Kansas, Spring Hill Middle School won first place, $3,000; John Paul II Catholic School won second place, $2,000 and Piper Middle School received third place, $1000.

Students were instructed to create a PSA that covered one of the following areas:

  • How energy is being used and how it can be conserved

  • Energy wasting habits or appliances and how to correct these habits

  • Energy conservation alternatives

  • Renewable energy resources

"This is our sixth year getting local youth involved in energy conservation," said David Allen, HUEE President. "The videos are getting better and better each year and we are impressed with the talent of the students. We hope the students continue to promote energy saving habits throughout their schools and communities."
