Heartland Utilities for Energy Efficiency Awards $12,000 to Area Middle Schools for Promoting Energy Efficiency

Heartland Utilities for Energy Efficiency (HUEE) is proud to announce the winners of the "Secure Energy Future" video contest. Sixth through eighth grade students in the Kansas City metro area were encouraged to create 120-second public service announcements (PSAs) that promote energy efficiency at home or at school. Six area middle schools were selected to receive grant money for their participation.

Plaza Middle School won first place for Missouri, $3,500 and Kearney Middle School won second place, $2,500. For Kansas, Spring Hill Middle School won first place, $3,500 and Piper Middle School received second place, $2,500.

Students were instructed to create a PSA that covered one of the following areas:

  • How energy is being used and how it can be conserved

  • Energy wasting habits or appliances and how to correct these habits

  • Energy conservation alternatives

  • Renewable energy resources

"This is our seventh year getting local youth involved in energy conservation," said Shaylyn Dean, HUEE President. "The videos are getting better and better each year and we are impressed with the talent of the students. We hope the students continue to promote energy saving habits throughout their schools and communities."
